Students’ union attacks Jubilee Mission Medical College

THRISSUR: About 20 members of the All-India Students’ Federation (AISF), the student wing of the CPI, barged into the office of the Jubilee Mission Medical College here on Tuesday afternoon and allegedly caused minor damage to the office.

The members, led by AISF State joint secretary K.P. Sandeep, raised slogans against the college management, which did not follow the government fee structure in admission. The police later arrested them.

AISF district committee said in a statement that it would continue to protest against the admission procedure of self-financing colleges under the Inter Church Council, which did not reach in an agreement with government in fee structure. The Minority Rights Protection Committee of the Thrissur Archdiocese staged a rally in the evening to protest the attack on Jubilee Mission College.

Addressing the rally, Vicar General Raphel Thattil said the church would not surrender to threats.

“We are not ready for an agreement on the fee structure in our college with the government under the present terms and conditions," he said. Those who could not even open a nursery school were criticising the church, which was running many prestigious education institutions for years, he said.

MIC Church Imam, Muhammed Faizi Onampilly inaugurated the meeting held at the end of the protest rally. The Kerala Catholic Youth Movement also took out a rally to protest the attack.
