Kozhikode: V. Mayankutty, accused in the murder of a girl at Payyoli on Monday, confessed that he had smothered the nine-year-old student to death, the police said.
He will be produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, Payyoli, on Wednesday. The Payyoli police have charged him with Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. Vadakara Circle Inspector Jaison K. Abraham is investigating the case.
Mayankutty was examined at the Dental College and at the Department of Forensic Medicine of the medical college hospital.
A post-mortem examination was conducted at the Government Medical College Hospital here on Tuesday. A brief autopsy statement said that the death was due to smothering. The complete autopsy report will be submitted later.
The body was buried on the Cherandathur mosque premises, near Payyoli. A hartal was observed in Maniyoor grama panchayat limits on Tuesday.
